Te mapa
Oak Bay sits just east of downtown Victoria, on the southeastern tip of Vancouver Island, and faces across Haro Strait towards the San Juan Islands. On a map it is defined by its coastline, a long run of coves, points and small beaches that gives the eastern edge of the municipality an intricate, broken outline.
Inland the pattern changes neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Near the Victoria boundary the streets form a fairly regular grid, with Oak Bay Avenue as a village-like high street. Further east, in the Uplands, roads curve softly around the terrain, following a plan drawn up by the Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm in the early twentieth century.
An Oak Bay map poster places those two worlds side by side: gentle grids and winding garden roads on the land, and a lacework of bays and headlands at the sea's edge. Parks, golf courses and shoreline green spaces break up the streets and give the composition room to breathe.
Small bays, rocky points and beaches such as Willows Beach and Cattle Point form a detailed, irregular coastline, the most striking line on the map.
In the Uplands, streets loop and bend around the landscape in a planned garden-suburb layout, a clear contrast with the straighter blocks further west.
The municipality's main shopping street runs east from the Victoria boundary. It forms a clear spine through the more regular grid of the western neighbourhoods.

Koteā ko Oak Bay
Oak Bay is the kind of place people hold on to: morning walks on the shore, a first home near the village, summers by the water. Its coastline makes a map that works beautifully on a wall.
Add a street name, family name or moving date in the title and subtitle, and fine-tune the coordinates line. Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand each give the shoreline a different mood.
