Te mapa
Papalotla, formally Papalotla de Xicohténcatl, is in the far south of Tlaxcala, right on the border with the state of Puebla and close to the city of Puebla. Its name comes from Nahuatl and is usually translated as place of butterflies. The volcano La Malinche rises to the north-east, and on clear days the higher peaks to the west are visible too.
From above the town has two distinct faces. The older centre follows the familiar Mexican pattern of a grid around a main square and church, with regular blocks in every direction. Around it, the larger shapes of factories, warehouses and highways reflect the industrial corridor that has grown up between Puebla and Tlaxcala.
A Papalotla map poster brings these layers together: the fine mesh of the old town, the heavier lines of the highways and the broad outlines of industrial parks, with farmland filling the gaps. In Blueprint it reads almost like a planner's drawing. In Sand it is closer to the warm light of the central highlands.

Factories and warehouses cluster along the major roads. Their large rectangular footprints contrast with the small blocks of the historic centre.
Papalotla meets Puebla along its southern edge. The built-up area continues across the line toward the Puebla metropolitan area.

Koteā ko Papalotla
Papalotla is home to many families whose lives are split between Tlaxcala and Puebla, and a map of the town marks where they come from. The butterfly in its name could make a fitting subtitle.
