Te mapa
Pattan lies in Baramulla district, in the north of the Kashmir valley, roughly halfway between Srinagar and Baramulla. The main highway through the valley runs straight through the town, and from above Pattan appears as a line of streets strung along that road, with lanes branching off into neighbourhoods and farmland.
The land here is the flat, fertile floor of the valley. Rice paddies, orchards, willow-lined channels and irrigation ditches fill the space around the town, and the Jhelum floodplain is not far away. On clear days the Pir Panjal and the northern ranges enclose the valley on the horizon, though on a map they stay just beyond the frame.
Pattan also has some of the oldest stone temples in Kashmir. The ninth-century ruins of the Shankaragaurishvara and Sugandhesha temples stand in the town. A Pattan map poster places them within the everyday geography of a road town in the valley.

Irrigated fields and orchards surround the town in a fine patchwork. Channels and field boundaries turn the countryside into a delicate, textured pattern.
