Te mapa
Payson sits near the geographic center of Arizona, at an elevation of about 5,000 feet in what locals call Rim Country. The Mogollon Rim, a long escarpment that marks the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, rises to the north. The town is surrounded by the Tonto National Forest, and its streets thin out quickly into ponderosa pine.
Two state highways meet here, one running north and south and one heading east, and their junction is the busiest part of the map. Away from those roads, the plan becomes irregular, with streets following washes and slopes rather than a grid. Clusters of homes sit in clearings among the trees.
Payson is known as a cool escape from the Phoenix summer heat and for a rodeo tradition it traces back to the 1880s. A Payson map poster suits people who come for the forest, the trails and the quiet, as well as those who have made a home here.
The meeting of the two main state highways gives Payson its central crossing, with commercial streets along both and quieter neighborhoods spreading outward.
Tonto National Forest surrounds the town, so the street pattern breaks up into scattered roads and pockets of housing as it reaches the pines.
The land rises north toward the Mogollon Rim, and the terrain shapes the loose, winding layout that sets Payson apart from the valley cities below.

Koteā ko Payson
Many people know Payson as the place where the desert turns to forest. A map of it is a reminder of cabins, summer weekends and trailheads, or of a decision to leave the city for somewhere quieter.
