Phaphūnd lies in the Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh, in the Doab, the fertile land between the Ganga and the Yamuna. The surrounding country is almost completely flat and intensively farmed. From above, the town is a tight knot of narrow lanes and closely spaced buildings, with roads running out to nearby villages across a landscape of small, irregular fields.
Like many towns on the plain, Phaphūnd grew organically rather than to a plan. Its lanes bend, split and meet at odd angles, and its older core is densest in the middle, thinning into looser housing at the edges. Ponds and small water tanks, common in this part of India, sometimes show up as pale shapes among the streets.
