Piendamo lies in Colombia's Cauca department, on the main road between Popayán and Cali. From above, the Pan-American Highway is the defining line. The town's main streets run parallel to it, and smaller blocks step up and down the surrounding slopes. The built-up area is long rather than round, following the valley and the route that connects it to the rest of the country.
Around Piendamo, the land rises into hills of farmland, pasture and small plots of cultivation, with streams cutting through the valleys. Agriculture shapes both the economy and the landscape here. The town centre has the square plan common to Colombian towns, with a central plaza and orderly blocks, while outer neighbourhoods follow the terrain more freely.
