Te mapa
Pilibangan lies in Hanumangarh district in northern Rajasthan, on the flat plains near the border with Punjab and Haryana. The land around it is irrigated farmland, crossed by canals and field roads, and the town forms a compact cluster within that agricultural landscape.
The area is known for Kalibangan, one of the major archaeological sites of the Harappan or Indus Valley civilisation, located in the Pilibangan area on the banks of the seasonal Ghaggar river. Excavations there revealed a planned settlement with a citadel, fortified walls and one of the earliest ploughed fields ever found.
A Pilibangan map poster shows the modern town in its setting: streets gathered around the main road and railway, surrounded by the long straight lines of fields and canals. In black and white the geometry of irrigated farmland makes a strong backdrop, and the place carries a history far older than its present streets.
Irrigation canals and field boundaries divide the surrounding land into long straight lines, giving the poster a strong geometric framework around the town.
The town gathers along its main road and railway line, which run across the plains and connect Pilibangan with Hanumangarh and the wider region.
The Harappan site of Kalibangan lies close by along the Ghaggar, a reminder that this part of the plain was home to a planned city more than four thousand years ago.
