Plattsburgh sits on the western shore of Lake Champlain in northern New York, where the Saranac River flows into Cumberland Bay. The river winds through the middle of the city before it reaches the lake, and downtown streets gather around its final bends. The rounded bay and the wide lake beyond fill the eastern side of any map.
The city's name is tied to the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814, when an American squadron defeated a British fleet in Plattsburgh Bay during the War of 1812. Later, the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base occupied a large site south of downtown, and its long runway still appears on the map as a clear straight line.
