Ploemeur is on the south coast of Brittany, just west of Lorient in the Morbihan. The coastline shapes much of the map: a long, broken edge of rocky points, small coves and sandy beaches facing the Atlantic, with small harbours such as Lomener along the shore. Inland, the town centre is compact, surrounded by hamlets and farmland.
A large part of the municipality is taken up by the Lorient-Lann-Bihoué airfield, which is both a naval air station and the regional airport.
