Poitiers sits on a steep-sided plateau in western France, a promontory almost encircled by the Clain and its tributary, the Boivre. The effect on a map is striking. A compact old town of irregular streets occupies the high ground, bounded on most sides by river valleys, and bridges and roads lead down to newer districts on the surrounding hills.
The medieval centre is full of churches, squares and winding lanes. Notre-Dame-la-Grande, with its richly carved Romanesque facade, stands near the old market square, and the Baptistère Saint-Jean is among the oldest Christian buildings in France. The Palais de Justice, once the palace of the Counts of Poitou and Dukes of Aquitaine, is close by at the heart of the plateau.
Poitiers gave its name to two famous battles, including the one fought nearby in 732, and its university, founded in 1431, is one of the oldest in France. The two rivers wrap around the promontory. Their green valleys draw curved lines and open space around the tight grain of the old town.

The main railway line follows the valley floor below the plateau. It is a long, clean stroke that separates the medieval centre from the newer districts beyond.
