Polkowice lies in Lower Silesia, in south-western Poland, at the heart of the Legnica-Głogów Copper District. The town's modern form is closely tied to the copper industry. Nearby mines operated by KGHM drew workers here in the second half of the twentieth century, and the town grew rapidly to house them.
