Te mapa
Portici lies on the coast just southeast of Naples, squeezed into a narrow band between the sea and the lower slopes of Vesuvius. It is one of the most densely populated towns in Europe, and the map shows it. The streets are packed tightly together, and there is almost no gap between Portici and its neighbours along the shore.
In the eighteenth century, the Bourbon kings built a royal palace here, and its long gardens climb inland from the coast. The palace now houses the agriculture faculty of the University of Naples Federico II. In 1839, the first railway in Italy opened between Naples and Portici, running along the shore where trains still pass today.
A Portici map poster captures the tension in that setting: a crisp coastline on one side, dense blocks in the middle, and the green rectangle of the palace grounds running uphill toward the volcano. The old coastal road, lined with historic villas, runs through it all.
The Bourbon palace and its gardens form a large, ordered green block reaching from the coast inland. It is the one broad open space in a very dense town.
Italy's first railway runs along the shoreline. It remains a firm line separating the town from the sea and the small harbour.
Narrow streets and tightly packed blocks fill almost every part of the map, merging seamlessly with Naples and Ercolano on either side.
