Porto Calvo lies in the north of Alagoas, inland from the coast, in a landscape of rolling hills and river valleys. On a map, the town appears as a compact cluster on uneven ground. Streets climb and bend with the terrain rather than following a strict grid, and the countryside around it is dominated by large fields of cultivated land.
The town is one of the oldest in the state and played a part in the seventeenth-century conflicts between the Portuguese and the Dutch in northeastern Brazil. It is known as the birthplace of Domingos Fernandes Calabar, a controversial figure of that period who sided with the Dutch. The older streets and churches recall that colonial past.
