Potenza is the capital of Basilicata and one of the highest regional capitals in Italy. It sits on a ridge well above the valley of the Basento. From above, the historic centre is a thin strip of streets following the crest. Newer districts spill down the slopes on either side, and the roads bend back and forth to handle the gradient.
The old core is easy to pick out because it is so compact. Tight blocks line a spine of streets along the top of the ridge. Below them the pattern loosens into curving roads, apartment clusters and green gaps where the ground is too steep to build on. The Basento runs along the valley floor, and the main road and railway corridors follow it.
