Te mapa
Pozzuoli sits on the bay that bears its name, just west of Naples, in the middle of the Campi Flegrei volcanic area. From above the town is framed by water and craters: the curve of the gulf to the south, the round hollow of the Solfatara inland, and a coastline shaped by volcanic landforms. The streets climb from the harbour up hillsides that were built on the rims of old eruptions.
In Roman times this was Puteoli, one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. Its Flavian Amphitheatre is among the largest in Italy, and the Macellum near the harbour, long called the Temple of Serapis, has been used for centuries to track the ground here slowly rising and sinking, a movement known as bradyseism.
The Rione Terra promontory holds the oldest part of the town above the port, and ferries leave from the harbour for Procida and Ischia. A Pozzuoli map poster shows a place where geology is visible in the street plan, with a compact historic core, a working waterfront and craters pressing close on every side.
The curved bay forms the entire southern edge of the map, and the harbour and ferry quays mark where the town meets the water.
The old town on its small promontory above the port is the densest and oldest part of the plan, a tight cluster rising straight from the sea.
The round Solfatara crater and other hollows of the Campi Flegrei appear as open circular shapes, bending the roads that pass around them.

Koteā ko Pozzuoli
A map of Pozzuoli suits anyone who has taken the ferry to the islands, studied the Campi Flegrei or grown up on this stretch of coast. It is an unusual portrait of a town shaped as much by volcanoes as by people.
