Preetz Map Poster & Print
Preetz is a small town in Schleswig-Holstein, south-east of Kiel, on the edge of the lake district known as Holsteinische Schweiz. The Schwentine river runs through it on its way to the Baltic, and several lakes lie close to the town. Among them are the Postsee to the south and the larger Lanker See to the east, both left behind by the ice age.
The town is known for Preetz Abbey, a former Benedictine nunnery founded in the thirteenth century that later became a secular foundation for noblewomen. Its church and grounds still sit apart from the old centre. Preetz was also once called the Schusterstadt, the shoemakers' town, because of the large number of cobblers who worked here.
A Preetz map poster is defined by water. The lakes form broad, irregular shapes on either side, the river links them in a narrow curving line, and the streets of the old town fill the dry ground between. The contrast between solid water and fine street detail makes this one of the more graphic small-town maps in northern Germany.

Schwentine river
The river winds through Preetz between the lakes and heads north towards Kiel. On the map it is a delicate thread linking the water bodies.
Abbey grounds
The former abbey stands in its own enclosure beside the river. Its separate cluster of buildings and paths is easy to pick out from the town centre.
