Puzhal is on the northwestern edge of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, beside the Puzhal lake, also called the Red Hills reservoir, one of the main sources of the city's drinking water. On a map, the reservoir takes up an enormous share of the frame, a broad smooth shape bordered by a long embankment. The built-up area packs tightly along its eastern and southern sides.
The streets are dense and mostly irregular, with small blocks and narrow lanes typical of Chennai's fast-growing suburbs. Major roads pass through toward the city centre and the northern highways, and newer layouts form small grids at the edges. The contrast between the large empty reservoir and the fine, crowded street pattern gives the print a strong, simple structure.
