Rais Hamidou lies on the Mediterranean coast just west of central Algiers. During the colonial period it was known as Pointe Pescade. Today it bears the name of Rais Hamidou, the celebrated Algerian naval commander of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The map is shaped by a tight strip of land between sea and hillside. The coast road runs along the shore, with houses and small streets packed between it and the steep slopes of Bouzaréah rising behind. Short, winding lanes climb uphill, and small coves and rocky points break up the shoreline.
