Ratangarh lies in Churu district in northern Rajasthan, on the edge of the Thar Desert. The land around it is flat and sandy, and on the map the town appears as a compact, dense patch of streets surrounded by very little else. A railway line and a few highways cross the plain, meeting here and making the town a local hub.
The town belongs to the broader region around Shekhawati, known for havelis built by merchant families, many decorated with painted walls. The older part of Ratangarh keeps the close-packed layout typical of desert towns in Rajasthan, where narrow streets and tall buildings kept out the heat and the wind-blown sand.
