Rawalakot sits on a broad upland plateau in the Poonch area of Azad Kashmir, and the map shows a town shaped by its terrain. The centre is a small, fairly dense cluster of streets and bazaars, while the roads leaving it bend and switch back as they climb into the surrounding hills and forested ridges.
