Rāya is a town in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, in the region long known as Braj. On a map it shows up as a compact knot of lanes and closely packed buildings, surrounded on every side by flat farmland. The older core has the irregular, tightly woven streets typical of towns in the Gangetic plain, while newer building spreads outward along the main roads.
