Te mapa
Rukban grew in the remote desert close to the point where the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq converge. It formed in the mid-2010s, when people fleeing the war in Syria gathered near an earthen berm on the frontier, and over the following years it became a large informal settlement. From above there are no old streets or planned blocks, only shelters, compounds and tracks spread across open ground.
Its population rose and fell sharply with the course of the conflict, access to aid and the closure of nearby borders. Conditions were long described as harsh, with water, food and medical care in short supply. In recent years many residents have left, and the settlement has changed considerably since its peak. Any map of Rukban therefore captures one particular moment.
A Rukban map poster does not show a conventional town. It records a web of dirt tracks, the line of the berm and clusters of dwellings against the flat, empty desert. For people who lived there, worked in the humanitarian response or followed its story, it can be a quiet record of a place that existed because people needed somewhere to wait.
An earthen embankment along the frontier runs as a long straight line across the map. The settlement first gathered around it.
Instead of paved streets, dirt tracks branch between clusters of shelters. The network is irregular and looks improvised, because it was.
The surrounding land is flat and almost featureless, so the settlement appears as a dense patch within wide empty space, a stark and unusual composition.

Koteā ko Rukban
This is not a decorative place in the usual sense. The map is chosen by former residents, aid workers, journalists and researchers who want to remember Rukban, mark time spent there or keep its story in view.
You can write your own title and subtitle, perhaps a name or a range of years, and edit the coordinates line. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. The plainer Classic and Paper styles suit its sober character.
