's-Hertogenbosch, usually called Den Bosch, is the capital of North Brabant. Its historic centre forms a rough triangle bounded by old walls, bastions and water, and it is one of the clearest fortress plans in the Netherlands. Inside, streets lead out from the triangular Markt. To the south and west, low-lying land stretches away, and in the past it was flooded on purpose as a defence.
The Dommel and the Aa meet near the city to form the Dieze, and the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal runs along the eastern side. Beneath the old town runs the Binnendieze, a network of narrow waterways partly covered by houses and streets, and visitors can explore it by boat. On a map its open sections appear as thin, winding lines threading between the blocks of the centre.
St John's Cathedral, a large Gothic church, dominates the centre. The painter Hieronymus Bosch lived and worked here and took his name from the town. The Bossche Broek nature reserve lies just south of the walls. The city received its charter in 1185, among the earliest in the country. A 's-Hertogenbosch map poster shows a medieval plan that still reads clearly today.

Narrow waterways wind beneath and between the buildings of the old town. Their visible sections form thin, curving lines through the centre, some of them passing under houses.
This open, low-lying nature reserve south of the walls was once part of the town's defensive floodplain. On the map it gives the old centre a clear green edge.

Koteā ko 's-Hertogenbosch
Den Bosch is a city people grow attached to through its canals, its cathedral and its compact old centre. A map of it is a natural gift for someone who studied, lived or married here, or who returns every year for Carnival.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, so you can add a date, a name or Oeteldonk if you like. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the fortress plan especially well.
