Saint-Gilles is one of the nineteen communes of the Brussels-Capital Region, just south of the historic centre. From above it is a tight weave of streets, with diagonal avenues cutting through the grid and squares where several roads meet. The land rises gently to the south, and the commune's edges touch the Brussels-South station and the inner ring.
Saint-Gilles is known for its Art Nouveau architecture. Victor Horta's house and studio, now the Horta Museum, is here and is part of a UNESCO-listed group of his town houses. The Parvis de Saint-Gilles, with its market and cafés, and the fortress-like Saint-Gilles prison are other well-known points in the commune.
A Saint-Gilles map poster shows the density and variety of a nineteenth-century urban district: long avenues, sharp junctions and small squares that give each neighbourhood its centre. It is a refined, intricate map with a clear sense of place.
Broad avenues cut across the grid at angles, creating sharp junctions and triangular blocks that give the map its distinctive geometry.
The market square at the heart of the commune is a small open space where several streets converge, a focal point on the poster.
To the north, the commune meets the inner ring and the Porte de Hal, where Saint-Gilles joins the historic core of Brussels.
