Te mapa
Saint-Lô, the prefecture of the Manche department, grew on a rocky promontory above the River Vire. The old enclosure on the spur, still partly ringed by ramparts, is the natural focus of any map of the town. The river curves below it, and newer districts spread across the surrounding slopes and plateaus.
The town was almost entirely destroyed in the summer of 1944 during the Battle of Normandy and became known as the capital of the ruins. The phrase was later used by Samuel Beckett, who worked here with the Irish Red Cross hospital. Reconstruction in the following decades gave much of the centre a more regular post-war layout, visible on the map as wider, straighter streets.
A Saint-Lô map poster shows those layers together: the medieval outline of the spur, the Vire and its valley, the post-war blocks, and the roads leading out into the hedged countryside of the Manche. It is compact and strongly composed, and it stays easy to read even at small sizes.
The old walled quarter occupies the rocky spur above the river. Its tight, sharply bounded shape stands at the centre of the composition.
The Vire loops around the foot of the promontory. This clear, curving line explains why the town was built on such a defensible height.
Districts rebuilt during the reconstruction have broader, more regular streets, a visible contrast with the organic pattern typical of older Norman towns.

Koteā ko Saint-Lô
Saint-Lô holds a particular place in the memory of the Normandy campaign. The map appeals to families linked to that history as much as to people who simply live or grew up here, in a town defined by careful rebuilding.
