Saint-Michel is a district in the north-central part of Montreal. It was once a separate town and became part of the city in 1968. On a map it follows the regular Montreal grid: long parallel streets crossed by avenues, with rows of plexes and small apartment blocks between them. The Metropolitan Autoroute runs along its southern side as a heavy horizontal band.
The most striking feature is a huge void in the middle of the grid. A former limestone quarry, later used as a landfill, has been gradually turned into Frédéric-Back Park. It is a wide open space with paths looping around its rim. Next to it are the TOHU circus arts centre and the international headquarters of Cirque du Soleil.
A Saint-Michel map poster shows a neighbourhood built right up to the edge of an enormous hole in the city. The contrast is sharp. Tight residential streets press in on all sides, and at the centre a broad, open shape tells the story of how industrial land was reclaimed.
The former quarry and landfill site forms a large open area in the heart of the district. The paths curving around its edge show clearly against the grid.
Long, evenly spaced residential streets run in parallel across the neighbourhood. This is the classic Montreal block pattern, rendered in fine, regular lines.
The elevated expressway marks the southern boundary with a thick line and interchanges. It separates Saint-Michel from the districts to the south.

Koteā ko Saint-Michel
Saint-Michel has been home to generations of Montrealers and to many newcomers from around the world. A map of its streets is a way to keep a particular corner of the city close, whether you still live there or moved away years ago.
The poster can be personalised with your own title, a subtitle such as a street name or year, and the coordinates line. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
