Te mapa
Saint-Nicolas lies immediately west of Liège, on the high ground above the Meuse valley. On a map it has no hard border with the city. Streets of terraced houses continue from one commune into the next, and the fine grain of the urban fabric only thins out towards the fields and open land further west.
Coal shaped this part of Wallonia for generations. The legacy is still visible from above in the form of former spoil heaps, the terrils. These rounded, often wooded mounds interrupt the street pattern, and their contours stand out as unexpected green islands among the rows of houses.
A Saint-Nicolas map poster shows a working suburb in detail. It includes the long residential streets running across the plateau, the main roads heading down to Liège, and the older village cores that were absorbed as the area grew. The pattern is dense but not uniform, which makes it well suited to a black-and-white print.
Former coal spoil heaps rise as rounded, green shapes between the streets. They are one of the most recognisable features of the old Liège mining basin.
Long rows of houses line the streets in a tight pattern. On the poster they create a dense texture that thins out only at the town's western edge.
Main routes run east from the plateau into the city. They connect Saint-Nicolas to the Meuse valley without any visible break in the built-up area.
