Donostia / San Sebastián has one of Europe's most recognisable coastlines. The bay of La Concha curves in an almost perfect arc between Monte Igueldo to the west and Monte Urgull to the east. The small island of Santa Clara sits in its mouth. On a map, that shell shape frames everything else, and the city fills the flat ground between the hills.
East of Urgull, the Urumea River reaches the sea beside Zurriola beach, dividing the old town and the grid of the nineteenth-century centre from the Gros district.
