São Mateus do Sul lies in the south of Paraná, on the banks of the Iguaçu River. The town is known for its oil shale deposits, where Petrobras operates a shale industrialisation unit, and for its production of erva-mate, the leaf used to make chimarrão. Many residents descend from Polish immigrants who settled the region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
From above, the town is organised in a fairly regular grid of streets on the higher ground near the river. The Iguaçu forms a broad, curving edge on one side, with bridges and roads leading across it. Around the urban area, the land is a patchwork of fields, forests and rural roads, and the industrial area sits at some distance from the centre.
A São Mateus do Sul map poster shows a town defined by its river and its surrounding land. The Iguaçu gives the composition a smooth, natural curve, the town grid provides order, and the rural roads add fine detail at the edges. It is a steady, balanced map for people with roots in this corner of Paraná.
The broad river curves along the town’s edge, forming the main natural line on the poster and separating the urban area from the land beyond.
The central streets follow a regular pattern of rectangular blocks, giving the town a clear and orderly shape on the map.
Beyond the centre, farm roads, forest patches and the shale industrial area break up the land, adding varied texture at the edges.
