São Miguel d'Oeste sits in the extreme west of Santa Catarina, close to the border with Argentina. From above, the town is a tight central grid laid over rolling ground. Its blocks stay orderly near the centre, then loosen as roads follow the contours of the surrounding hills and the small streams that cut between them.
The municipality is one of the regional centres of the Extremo Oeste, a farming region shaped by agriculture and dairy production. On a map you can see this in the transition at the edges.
