Shaqlāwah lies in the Erbil governorate of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, northeast of Erbil, on the slopes below the Safeen mountain range. It has long been a summer retreat for people escaping the heat of the plains. Its springs, orchards and cooler air are what give the town its character.
The terrain shapes the map. Streets follow the contours of the hillside, bending and switching back rather than meeting in a grid, and the main road runs through the town along lower ground. Orchards and gardens of fruit trees and vines fill the slopes around the built-up area, giving way higher up to open mountain ground.
