Te mapa
Soignies lies in the province of Hainaut in Wallonia, between Mons and Brussels, in gently rolling farmland. The town grew around a monastery founded by Saint Vincent Madelgaire in the seventh century. Its historic centre still gathers around the great collegiate church that bears his name, and from above, streets converge on that core from every direction.
Just outside the centre, the map reveals something less expected. Large, deep and geometric quarries are cut into the ground to extract the blue-grey limestone known in Belgium as pierre bleue. On a Soignies map poster, these quarries appear as bold, sharply outlined shapes against the softer lines of the Senne valley and the surrounding fields.
The Collegiate Church of Saint Vincent is one of the finest Romanesque buildings in Belgium, and stone from Soignies has been used in buildings across the country for centuries. The town remains a market and administrative centre for the area, with a compact old core and newer districts spreading along the roads to neighbouring towns.

Large quarries on the edge of town show as deep, angular cut-outs in the landscape. They are among the most striking shapes on the map.
The Senne rises in this area and flows north toward Brussels. Its valley traces a gentle line through the fields and villages near the town.
