Te mapa
Sopur lies in the north of the Kashmir Valley, in Baramulla District, on the Jhelum River a short distance downstream of Wular Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in South Asia. From above, the river runs through the town in a broad channel, with streets gathered on both banks and bridges joining the two sides.
The town is known across India for its apples, and the land around it is covered with orchards arranged in neat rows, together with fields and villages. On a map this agricultural setting forms a fine, regular texture around the denser, older streets of the centre, which follow the river and the roads leading out of town.
Beyond the orchards the valley is enclosed by mountains, and the wetlands and open water of Wular spread to the northeast. A Sopur map poster shows this combination of river, town, orchard and lake, a landscape shaped by water and farming in one of the most distinctive valleys of the Himalayan region.
The Jhelum River flows through the middle of Sopur after leaving Wular Lake, dividing the town into two parts connected by bridges across the water.
Orchards surround the town on almost every side, their regular rows and plots forming a detailed pattern that reflects Sopur's reputation as a centre of the apple trade.
Upstream to the northeast lies Wular Lake, a large freshwater lake with surrounding wetlands whose broad, open outline can frame the edge of the map.
