Te mapa
St. Lawrence Island lies in the northern Bering Sea, west of mainland Alaska and closer to Russia's Chukotka coast than to Alaska itself. It is long and relatively narrow, stretching east to west, with a coastline of lagoons, spits and gentle curves.
Most of the island is tundra and low hills with no road network. Its two villages, Gambell near the northwestern tip and Savoonga on the north coast, are home to Yupik communities with close cultural ties to the people across the strait in Chukotka. The island is known for its long tradition of walrus ivory carving.
A St. Lawrence Island map poster shows a place defined by coastline and distance. Long lagoons and barrier spits trace the shore, while the two villages appear as small, precise clusters on an otherwise open landmass. It is a quiet, meaningful map for people with ties to the island or to the Bering Strait region.
The village sits near the island's northwestern point, looking out toward the Chukotka coast across the open water of the Bering Sea.
The second village lies on the north coast to the east, forming the only other notable cluster of buildings on the map.
Long lagoons and narrow sand spits line parts of the coast, giving the island's outline a soft, layered edge.
