Surendranagar lies in the north-east of Saurashtra in Gujarat, forming a joint urban area with the older town of Wadhwan. On a map the two read as one continuous settlement on flat, dry land, with the Bhogavo river running along their edge. The dense streets of Wadhwan's historic core contrast with the more regular layout of later neighbourhoods.
