Te mapa
Tarakeswar is a town in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, northwest of Kolkata on the fertile Gangetic plain. It is best known for the Taraknath temple, dedicated to Shiva, which draws large numbers of pilgrims. The crowds are biggest in the month of Shravan, when devotees walk to the town carrying water from the Ganges.
The town's map reflects its role as a destination. Streets converge on the temple area, where the network grows tight and irregular, full of short lanes and market frontage. Around it, the plain is dotted with ponds and tanks. The built-up area gives way to paddy fields and villages with scattered clusters of houses.
Tarakeswar is also the end of a suburban railway line from Sheoraphuli, and the track arriving from the east is a clear straight line on the map. A Tarakeswar map poster brings these elements together: the rail approach, the dense temple quarter and the Bengal countryside around it, marked everywhere by water.
The lanes close to the Taraknath temple are the tightest and most irregular part of the town. This knot of small streets marks its spiritual and commercial centre.
The suburban line from Sheoraphuli ends here. It arrives as a straight track that cuts cleanly across the curving streets and anchors one side of the composition.
Many small bodies of water are scattered through and around the town. They appear as rounded and rectangular shapes across the flat, open plain.
