Te mapa
Thenia lies in Boumerdès province, east of Algiers, at a low pass in the hills that separate the Mitidja plain from the approaches to Kabylie. Its name reflects this position, since in Algerian Arabic a thenia is a mountain pass. Under French rule the town was called Ménerville. On a map, its place at a natural gateway is clear at once.
The main road and the railway toward Kabylie and eastern Algeria both squeeze through the gap in the hills and pass through the town, and Thenia has long been a railway junction. The streets of the centre form a fairly regular pattern around these routes. Newer neighbourhoods spread onto the surrounding slopes, and their streets become more irregular as the ground rises.
A Thenia map poster captures a place defined by movement: road and rail lines converge on the town like thread through the eye of a needle. The contrast between the orderly centre and the hills around it gives the print its structure, and the Mediterranean coast lies only a short distance to the north.
The town sits in a gap in the hills between the Mitidja and Kabylie, and the surrounding terrain funnels roads and buildings toward this narrow passage.
Rail lines toward Tizi Ouzou and eastern Algeria split near Thenia. They draw long, curving lines through the town and are among the strongest features on the map.
Beyond the centre, newer residential areas climb the slopes. Their streets bend with the contours and give the edges of the map a looser texture.
