Te mapa
Tournai is one of the oldest cities in Belgium, set on the river Scheldt in the province of Hainaut, close to the French border. From above, the river cuts through the centre and splits the old town into two banks. A ring of boulevards follows the line of former fortifications. Inside it, a dense pattern of medieval streets converges on the main squares.
The city is best known for the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, with its five towers, and for its belfry. Both are listed by UNESCO. Tournai also has the Pont des Trous, a fortified medieval bridge over the Scheldt. In the fifth century it served as an early capital of the Franks, and the tomb of the Frankish king Childeric was found here.
A Tournai map poster brings together the curve of the river, the tight lanes of the historic core and the smooth loop of the boulevards. In black and white, these layers form a composition that feels both intricate and complete, a portrait of a small city shaped over many centuries.
The river runs through the heart of the city, dividing the old town into two banks linked by several bridges, and gives the map a strong central line.
Streets converge on the Grand-Place and the five-towered Cathedral of Notre-Dame, forming the densest and most irregular part of the map.
Wide boulevards trace the line of the old city walls, enclosing the historic centre in a clear, rounded outline.
