Te mapa
Três Barras lies on the northern plateau of Santa Catarina, next to Canoinhas and close to the border with the state of Paraná. The name, meaning three river mouths, refers to the rivers that meet in the area. On a map, the town has a regular grid of streets on a gentle rise, with water and wooded land around it.
The town's history is linked to the timber industry. In the early twentieth century, the Southern Brazil Lumber and Colonization Company ran a large sawmill here, cutting the region's araucaria forests. That period coincided with the Contestado War, which marked the whole plateau. Today, large areas of forest and plantations still surround the town.
A Três Barras map poster shows a compact planned grid next to rivers and large empty blocks of forest and farmland. Its straight streets contrast clearly with the natural curves of the watercourses, a simple, well-balanced composition from the southern Brazilian highlands.
The town centre is laid out in straight, even blocks, forming a crisp rectangle of lines in the middle of the map.
The rivers that gave Três Barras its name wind through the surrounding land, adding soft curves around the orderly town.
Large areas of woodland and plantations surround the settlement. In print they are open space crossed only by a few roads and tracks.
