From above, Turda lies in the broad valley of the Arieș, which crosses the town from west to east and pulls the street pattern along its banks. The historic centre sits on the rising ground north of the river. Newer housing estates and industrial areas spread over the flatter land beside the water and along the main roads toward Cluj-Napoca.
The town has deep roots. The Roman camp of Potaissa stood here, and in 1568 the Diet of Turda passed an edict on religious tolerance that is often cited in European history. Today most visitors come for Salina Turda, a former salt mine turned into an underground attraction on the northern outskirts.
