Te mapa
Ukiah is the county seat of Mendocino County in Northern California, set in a long valley along US Route 101. The name is usually traced to a Pomo word meaning deep valley, which describes its setting well. From above, the town is a neat grid on the flat valley floor, with the main commercial street running north to south through the middle.
The Russian River flows just east of downtown, and the freeway parallels it. Beyond them, the valley floor is divided into vineyards and orchards. Their rows create fine parallel lines on a map. Hills covered with oak and conifers rise on both sides, so the grid ends abruptly where the slopes begin.
A Ukiah map poster shows this valley structure clearly: river, highway and town lined up along the same axis, with farmland and hills to the east and west. Nearby in the valley is the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, a large Buddhist monastery that many visitors remember alongside the town itself.
The historic centre follows a regular street grid on the valley floor. On the poster it forms a tidy block of streets surrounding the main north–south axis.
The river winds along the eastern side of town, with US 101 running parallel. Together they create a strong linear edge between the town and the farmland beyond.
Wine grapes cover much of the surrounding valley floor. Their straight rows and rectangular blocks add a fine, textured pattern around the edges of the town.

Koteā ko Ukiah
Ukiah often means something to people who came to Mendocino County for land, wine or a quieter life, and to those who grew up there. The map shows the valley setting that defines daily life in the town.
