Ústí nad Labem lies in northern Bohemia, where the Elbe cuts a deep valley through the České středohoří hills and the Bílina River joins it. From above, the city is shaped by that valley. Streets fill the narrow floor along both banks, then climb the slopes in curving lines, and forested hills close in on every side.
The Elbe is the main feature of the map: a broad, steady band crossing the frame, with bridges linking the two banks. The Mariánský most, a cable-stayed bridge with a single tilted pylon, is one of the city's best-known structures. On the right bank, Střekov castle stands on a rock above the river, a landmark that has drawn painters and travellers for centuries.
