Varaždin Map Poster & Print
Varaždin lies in northern Croatia, close to the Drava River. It was briefly the country's capital in the eighteenth century, until a great fire in 1776 led to the government moving to Zagreb. The town was rebuilt, and its centre is now known as one of the best-preserved Baroque ensembles in Croatia, with palaces, churches and squares close together.
On the map, the historic core is a compact, irregular grid of streets, surrounded by boulevards and parkland where the old defences once stood. To the north-west, the Old Town fortress sits within its earthworks and moats, a strong geometric shape. The town cemetery, laid out with clipped hedges and avenues, is another well-known feature.
