Te mapa
Varennes lies on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, downstream from Montreal, in the Montérégie area of Quebec. The river forms its north-western edge, and on a map that long, broad shoreline sets the orientation of everything else: the historic road along the water, the neighbourhoods behind it and the farmland stretching inland.
Varennes is one of the older communities of New France, and its old village along the river keeps a traditional parish layout. It is the birthplace of Marguerite d'Youville, founder of the Grey Nuns and the first Canadian-born saint, and a sanctuary in town is dedicated to her memory.
The town is also home to Hydro-Québec's research institute, set among industrial land near the river. A Varennes map poster shows these parts together, from the old village and the shore to the newer residential areas and the long, straight rural ranges that extend toward the interior.
The river runs along the north-west side of town, a wide open shape that gives the map a strong, calm boundary.
Near the water, the historic core gathers around the church, with a denser street pattern than the surrounding districts.
Inland, long straight roads divide the land into narrow farm lots in the traditional Quebec pattern, drawn as parallel lines across the countryside.
