Te mapa
Villa Hayes stands on the western bank of the Paraguay River, a short distance north of Asunción, where the capital's surroundings meet the Gran Chaco. On a map the town is a modest grid of blocks close to the water, with the river, its side channels and broad floodplain wetlands filling much of the space around it. Beyond, the land is flat and open.
The town is the capital of Presidente Hayes department, and both names honour Rutherford B. Hayes, the nineteenth US president. In 1878 he acted as arbitrator in a territorial dispute between Paraguay and Argentina and ruled in Paraguay's favour, a decision still remembered locally. The Remanso bridge now links Villa Hayes with the Asunción side of the river.
A Villa Hayes map poster makes the most of the river setting: the straight town grid, the long crossing of the bridge and the curves of the Paraguay River with its wetlands. The contrast between tidy streets and the loose, watery landscape gives the poster a strong, clear composition in any of the five styles.
The wide river curves along the town's eastern side, the dominant feature of the map and the boundary between the Chaco and eastern Paraguay.
The road bridge over the river connects Villa Hayes with the Asunción metropolitan area, drawing a single decisive line across the water.
West of the river the land opens into low wetlands and grassland, with channels and lagoons scattered across the map instead of streets.
