Völklingen Map Poster & Print
Völklingen lies on the Saar River in Saarland, a short way downstream from Saarbrücken and close to the French border. The town stretches along the valley, with the river, the railway and the main roads running in parallel. Residential districts climb the wooded slopes on either side. It is a linear place, shaped by the valley more than by any single centre.
The most striking feature on the map is the Völklingen Ironworks, a huge former ironworks beside the river that stopped production in 1986. In 1994 UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site, the first industrial monument from the height of industrialisation to be listed. Today it hosts exhibitions among its blast furnaces.
