Volla belongs to the metropolitan area of Naples and lies on the low plain that stretches northeast of the city towards the slopes of Vesuvius. On a map, the land is completely flat, and nearly every part of it is built on. Its streets run into those of the neighbouring towns, so the municipal boundary is more a line on paper than a visible edge.
The layout mixes older farm roads with newer blocks. The farm roads come from the time when this plain was intensively cultivated market-garden land, and many still run straight and narrow between buildings. Larger roads and rail lines cross the area and tie Volla into the dense transport web around Naples.
