Walcourt stands on a rocky spur in the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region of Wallonia, above the valley of the Eau d'Heure. From above, the old town forms a compact knot. Short streets spiral around the high point where the basilica stands, then drop quickly toward the river and the railway threaded along the valley floor.
Past the historic core, the map opens into the rolling Walloon countryside: scattered villages, field boundaries and small woods linked by country roads. The municipality covers a wide rural area, so the town centre is only a small concentrated mark among open land. To the south lie the large reservoirs of the Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure.
Walcourt is best known for the Basilica of Saint-Materne and the Marche de la Trinité, a folkloric military procession that is part of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse marches recognised by UNESCO.
