Te mapa
Washougal sits on the north bank of the Columbia River in Clark County, Washington, where the broad lower river begins to narrow into the Columbia River Gorge. On a map the town is a band of streets between water and hills. Flat ground lies near the shore, and residential lanes bend and branch as the land rises toward the forested country to the north.
The Washougal River gives the town its name and much of its structure. It comes down from the Cascade foothills and joins the Columbia here, so its curving channel and the wide main river frame the streets from two sides. State Route 14 follows the shoreline east toward the gorge, a clean line that links Washougal to neighbouring Camas and to Vancouver further west.
A Washougal map poster shows how the river town meets the landscape, in black and white. The riverside flats, the looser suburban streets on the slopes and the open expanse of the Columbia all work well as line drawing. The town is also known for its long-running woollen mill, a reminder of the industry that shaped the older blocks near the water.
The Washougal River curves in from the northeast and joins the Columbia at the edge of town. The two rivers form a natural fork of water that frames the older streets.
East of town the Columbia begins to narrow between steeper ground. On the poster the tightening shoreline points toward the Columbia River Gorge, which begins just beyond the town.
Low ground between the town and the Columbia holds wetlands and a wildlife refuge. They appear as calm, lightly marked space, a soft edge between the street grid and the river.
