Te mapa
Wervik stands on the north bank of the Lys, known in Dutch as the Leie, which forms the border between Belgium and France here. On the opposite bank lies Wervicq-Sud, the French half of what was once a single settlement. The map shows one town divided by a river and a national border.
The historic centre is compact, with streets gathered around the market square and the large Gothic church of Sint-Medardus. From there it spreads outward into brick terraces and newer housing. The canalised Lys runs in long straight stretches, and the surrounding land is the flat farmland typical of West Flanders.
Wervik was long a centre of tobacco growing and processing, and today it is home to Belgium's national tobacco museum. Being close to the Ypres front, the area also saw heavy fighting in the First World War. A Wervik map poster places all of this along a single, clearly drawn river line.
The river marks the border with France, and the poster shows both banks, so you can easily see how one historic town became two in different countries.
The large church at the heart of Wervik is a Gothic landmark, and the streets of the old centre converge on it and the square beside it.
Beyond the town, flat fields and straight country roads spread across West Flanders, land that was once largely given over to growing tobacco.

Koteā ko Wervik
Wervik works for people from West Flanders, for families living on both sides of the border, and for anyone interested in the landscapes of the First World War. The river gives the design a clear line through the middle.
Choose your own title and subtitle, perhaps in Dutch or French, and keep or change the coordinates line. Then pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the canalised river and the flat, orderly land.
